Moving with confidence
A Mindful Movement & Chair Yoga Program for Senior Living Communities
Bring Moving with Poise to Your Community
Helping residents maintain mobility, body awareness, confidence, and connection through accessible movement, breath, mindfulness, and intentional practice.

Joy in Movement
Movement is part of how we experience life.
As we get older, everyday movement can sometimes feel less certain. Getting up from a chair, stepping off a curb, walking across an uneven surface, reaching for something, or navigating a busy grocery store can become moments that require more thought—and sometimes more courage.
When confidence in the body begins to change, people may naturally start doing less.
Moving with Confidence was created to help change that.
This is a movement program designed specifically for senior living communities, using accessible chair yoga and mindful movement to build strength, balance, coordination, mobility, and confidence—while keeping something equally important at the center of the practice:
the joy of moving.

The goal isn’t to make movement feel like another obligation or another measure of physical ability.
It is to help residents feel more comfortable exploring what their bodies can do, discover movement they enjoy, and build confidence that carries beyond the class.
Because movement isn’t only about exercise.
It is about being able to get out into the world.
To walk to the dining room.
To meet a friend.
To go shopping.
To travel.
To play with a grandchild.
To get up, move around, and participate in the things that make life feel like life.
Moving with Confidence creates an encouraging environment where residents can strengthen their physical abilities, practice balance and coordination, explore movement at their own level, and experience the pleasure of moving together.
The goal is not simply to move more.
It is to feel confident enough to keep moving—and to enjoy it along the way.

Why Moving with Confidence?
Movement programs for older adults should do more than provide a place to exercise.
They should create opportunities for residents to maintain physical ability, challenge themselves appropriately, and experience the confidence that comes from knowing their bodies can still adapt and respond.
Moving with Confidence brings together accessible movement with purposeful work on strength, balance, coordination, mobility, and body awareness.
The program is designed to help residents:
-
Maintain and develop functional strength
-
Practice balance and stability
-
Improve coordination and body awareness
-
Maintain comfortable mobility and range of motion
-
Become more confident with everyday movement
-
Discover physical activities they enjoy
-
Stay engaged and motivated to keep moving
The focus is not on performance, flexibility, or achieving a particular physical standard.
It is on creating regular opportunities to move, explore, strengthen, and participate.
For senior living communities, this means offering residents a movement experience that is both physically purposeful and genuinely enjoyable.

What Makes Moving with Confidence Different?
Moving with Confidence is not simply a traditional yoga class adapted for a chair.
It is a movement program created specifically for older adults, with an emphasis on accessibility, physical confidence, and enjoyment.
The chair is used as a tool for support and adaptability, while classes can also incorporate standing movement when appropriate.
Movement is used to explore:
Strength
Building and maintaining the physical strength that supports everyday activities.
Balance
Practicing stability, weight shifting, and controlled changes in position.
Coordination
Challenging the body and mind to work together through varied movement patterns.
Mobility
Maintaining comfortable movement through the joints and body.

Body Awareness
Becoming more familiar with how the body feels, moves, and responds.
Confidence
Experiencing capability through movement rather than focusing on limitation.
And throughout the practice, there is room for something equally important:
Joy
Movement can be purposeful without feeling clinical.
It can be challenging without feeling intimidating.
And it can support physical wellbeing while still being something residents genuinely look forward to.
The Practice
Each class is designed to be engaging, accessible, and adaptable to different levels of mobility and physical ability.
A session may include:
-
Chair yoga and accessible movement
-
Functional strength exercises
-
Balance and stability work
-
Coordination exercises
-
Joint mobility and range-of-motion movements
-
Gentle stretching
-
Seated and standing movement
-
Functional movement patterns
-
Body awareness
-
Mindful movement
-
Relaxation and restorative practices
Classes can vary from week to week, giving residents opportunities to work with different movement patterns while building familiarity and confidence over time.
There is no expectation to keep up with anyone else.
Residents are encouraged to work at their own level while remaining curious about what their bodies can do.

More Than Chair Yoga
Chair yoga is an important part of Moving with Confidence, but the program is not limited to seated yoga poses.
The chair provides stability and support, allowing residents to explore movement in ways that may otherwise feel less accessible.
A seated movement can build strength.
A standing exercise can challenge balance.
A coordinated sequence can develop physical awareness.
A simple reach can encourage mobility.
A change in position can build confidence.
The goal is not perfect form.
It is not about how far someone can stretch or how long they can hold a posture.
It is about finding movement that feels possible, meaningful, and enjoyable.
Designed for Different Abilities
Senior living communities bring together residents with different levels of strength, mobility, balance, and physical confidence.
Moving with Confidence is designed with that diversity in mind.
Exercises can be modified throughout the class, allowing residents to participate seated, standing, or through a combination of both when appropriate.
Some residents may be focused on maintaining their current abilities.
Others may want to challenge themselves and build greater strength, balance, or coordination.
The program allows for both within the same supportive environment.
The practice adapts to the person.
No previous yoga experience is required.
Built for Senior Living
Moving with Confidence is designed for organizations serving older adults, including:
-
Independent Living
-
Assisted Living
-
Active Adult Communities
-
Senior Wellness Programs
-
Community Centers
-
Residential Senior Communities

The program can be offered as a recurring weekly class, part of a community wellness schedule, or as a customized movement experience for residents.
The emphasis is on creating something residents can participate in consistently, feel comfortable returning to, and genuinely enjoy.
Because the most useful movement program is one people actually want to keep doing.
Beyond the Class
The work residents do during Moving with Confidence connects naturally to everyday movement.
Standing and sitting.
Turning.
Reaching.
Walking.
Changing direction.
Navigating different surfaces.
Moving with greater coordination and awareness.
These are not abstract exercises.
They are the movements that allow us to participate in everyday life.
Moving with Confidence gives residents an opportunity to practice these physical foundations in an encouraging environment—building familiarity and confidence that can extend beyond the class.
